Buildings account for over 30% of global energy consumption, and thus are a critical component of any effort to improve the sustainability of energy use – particularly in urban areas. Demand side management (DSM) enable to modify the energy demand for consumers, aiming for global energy efficiency, increased utilization of renewable energies and optimized utilization of production facilities and energy infrastructure.
A building’s energy demand highly depend on user behaviour, but the baseline of energy demand also depends on establishment and enforcement of energy efficient building design codes. With relatively simple active and passive building energy efficiency measures, the energy demand can be significantly reduced.
